Landfill Diversion vs. Zero Landfill: What’s the Difference for Food Manufacturers?

“Landfill diversion” and “zero landfill” are often used interchangeably. They aren’t necessarily the same thing.

For a food manufacturer trying to improve its waste program, understanding the difference can help turn a sustainability objective into something operationally useful.

Landfill Diversion Starts With the Waste Stream

Landfill diversion is exactly what it sounds like: finding alternatives to sending materials to landfill.

Those alternatives can take many forms. Cardboard may be recycled. Metals may be recovered. Food residuals may have opportunities for donation, upcycling, nutrient recovery, anaerobic digestion or other beneficial uses. Some non-recyclable materials may be appropriate for energy recovery.

The appropriate solution depends on the material.

A plant doesn’t generate “waste.” It generates waste streams. And those streams can be very different from one another.

Zero Landfill Requires Looking at the Entire Facility

A zero-landfill initiative takes a broader view.

Instead of finding a recycling outlet for one or two obvious materials, the facility examines virtually everything leaving the plant.

What is it? How much is being generated? Why is it being generated? Can it be prevented? Can it be reused? Can it be recycled? Can value be recovered from it? Is energy recovery appropriate? What truly has no practical alternative to disposal?

That process often identifies opportunities that aren’t obvious when all waste is combined.

Prevention Comes First

The best waste is often the waste that isn’t generated.

EPA’s Wasted Food Scale places prevention at the top, followed by donation and upcycling. Recycling pathways come after opportunities to keep food serving its original purpose have been exhausted.

If a manufacturer can improve yield, reduce rejected product, reuse an ingredient or prevent packaging waste, that can be more valuable than finding a better destination after the waste has already been generated.

Recycling should complement waste prevention, not replace it.

One Material, Multiple Possibilities

Consider an off-spec packaged food product. It might contain cardboard cases, plastic liners, food material and perhaps metal or other packaging components.

Separating it may create several usable streams.

The same principle applies throughout a manufacturing plant. Wastewater residuals may contain recoverable fats and oils. Organic residuals may contain nutrients. Certain dry materials may have energy value. Cardboard, metals and plastics may have commodity value.

Zero Landfill Is a Process, Not a Slogan

Real manufacturing operations are complicated. Markets change. Waste streams change. Regulations change. Recycling outlets change. Contamination happens.

A useful zero-landfill strategy is based on continually asking whether a better practical outlet exists. That requires measurement, documentation and periodic reevaluation.

Making Circular Practical

Circularity sounds simple on a diagram. Making it work inside an operating manufacturing facility is harder.

The goal is straightforward:

Prevent what can be prevented. Recover what can be recovered. Recycle what can be recycled. Find productive uses for what remains. And landfill only what truly needs to be landfilled.

That’s how landfill diversion becomes more than a percentage on a sustainability report. It becomes part of how the plant operates.
